Lairds Walk

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)

About Lairds Walk

The Lairds Walk is a circular route with gentle gradients and a firm surface comprising forest roads and paths. The fields opposite Finart Bay were once a Forestry Commission nursery supplying seedlings for new plantations throughout Scotland.

Along the shoreline there are picnic tables and benches situated in rest points and viewing areas. Leaving the shore, the path leads you through a stand of mixed conifers and onto the forest road, from here you head back towards Ardentinny picnic site passing the burial chamber of Archibald Douglas Esquire, the Laird of Ardentinny, who died in 1860.

See also our pages on forests around Dunoon.

How to get there:

Lairds Walk can be started from Ardentinny Car park in Ardentinny and Glenfinnart which is part of Argyll Forest Park. Dunoon is the nearest town or village.

There are two equally appealing approaches to Ardentinny.

Take the car ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, and follow the A815 then the A880.

Alternately, take the A82 from Glasgow along the western shore of Loch Lomond through Tarbet, entering the Park at Arrochar, follow the A815 at Cairndow, then take the A880 to Ardentinny.

What's of interest

Throughout the inter-war period, when land prices were low, the Forestry Commission bought or leased land to build up large holdings. Glenfinart, Ardentinny nursery once supplied the whole of Scotland with seedling trees.
