Deadwater Walking Trail

(Average user rating3 unrated 3/5)

About Deadwater Walking Trail

The summit of Deadwater Fell lies at just under 1900 feet (571 metres) and straddles the border between Scotland and England. The spectacular panoramic views from the top are now available not only for cyclists to enjoy but also walkers. Starting from Kielder Castle, this trail follows both forest road and surfaced trail to access the cresting open moorland above the forest. The uphill climb is well worth the effort as the views on a clear day stretch all the way from the Lake District to the Pentland Hills near Edinburgh and even over to the North Sea coast. Using an OS map, the more adventurous can plot a route to Kielder Stone and onto Kielderhead Moor for a full day's walking. Please note this walk has fairly strenuous sections in places. Walkers should be fully prepared for the conditions and should anticipate the potential for dramatic changes in the weather.

How to get there:

Deadwater Walking Trail can be started from Kielder Castle Forest Park Centre in Kielder which is part of Kielder. Kielder Village near Bellingham is the nearest town or village.

Kielder Castle is situated at the northern end of Kielder Water, off the C200.

We visited on Easter Monday hoping to find a nice walk with good views. There was a complete lack of information regarding the walking trails available to us. Trail was hard to find, and a Forestry Ranger although friendly, struggled to remember where it started. There were no signposts describing how far the walk was/how far along we were, and the occasional way-markers badly placed and some in need of repair. I wouldn't call this particularly challenging or exciting - more of an uphill slog. For the majority of the walk views are hidden by the forest, and almost the entire walk is on fire roads. Being Easter Monday, we were initially surprised at the emptiness of the car park, however having walked the trail, and viewed much of the MTB route along the way I can perhaps assume locals have somewhere better to be. If there was an option, this would honestly received a 'zero' rating. Suffice it to say, we won't be back again.

Completed end of July, Heather just turning and slightly overcast so completely deserted! Amazing walk, remarkable views at summit despite the weather!

What's of interest

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: March to May is a particularly sensitive time for farmers as the fields are full of young lambs. It is also bird nesting season and a number of species nest directly on the ground. If you are taking a dog out with you ensure it is under control at all times and on a lead where there is a risk of contact with livestock or when walking on open moorland.
