Woodpecker Trail

About Woodpecker Trail

This walk circles the whole forest. It uses a combination of surfaced and unsurfaced routes, so walking boots are recommended. It also shares part of its route with horse riders and cyclists.

How to get there:

Woodpecker Trail can be started from Salcey Forest Access Point in Salcey Forest. Hartwell is the nearest town or village.

Salcey Forest is between Milton Keynes and Northampton, and located immediately to the east of the small village of Hartwell.

Wildlife

Birds: On this trail you could see all three species of British woodpecker: the green, greater and lesser spotted varieties.

I think the blue post signs are easy to follow as I looked up a map on google BEFORE going to the forest and had a printed version with me. However for future reference, the sell maps at the cafe for ■3. :)

Had difficulty following the blue signs as did other people I met. Some had obviously been knocked over .... Others maybe missing? Was very muddy in places too. Will return in better weather and with a map!

Really lovely walk but hot ph so lost. Followed all the blue signs - or so I thought - but some of them are a little bit misleading. After doing a giant, pretty and completely unnecessary circle part way through the walk I eventually looked up a map using my phone... Which I'm now following all the way back to the carpark ;-)
