About The Blue Man Walk

A trail for the more serious walker connecting Broxa and Dalby Forests via Langdale Forest. Public transport is not available to the start of the route but is available from or within 3 miles of Low Dalby Village - check the National Park's Moorsbus service. The walk ends at Allerston on the A170 12 miles west of Scarborough. Use OS Outdoor Leisure Map 27. Start Grid ref is SE 964945. End Grid ref is SE 877831. The route follows forest roads, earth tracks and paths some of which are narrow and steep in places.

How to get there:

The Blue Man Walk can be started from Reasty Bank in Broxa. Burniston is the nearest town or village.

Follow the directions given in the main site for Broxa. Follow the road from the 'T' junction west of Burniston at the end of Limestone Road for about two and a half miles. Reasty Bank is at the end of a long straight road on the edge of the hill.

Did some of this walk backwards from Allerston to Givendale head by a bit of detective work figuring out where the blue man posts were supposed to point. The route sign at the finish is smashed and some of the posts are dislodged so tracing the old route was a fun challenge on the way up the dale. Not knowing the name, It seemed like a logical search on google to look for 'Blue Man Walk' but I was still surprised when my girlfriend found this! There are sections of the trail along the upper east side of Givendale that are blocked with fallen saplings and overgrown, causing a detour via the adjacent field. Doesn't look like the route is likely to get any TLC in future, given how overgrown and unmarked some sections already are. Pity, because it's a nice walk. If the walking route is now redundant, I would suggest the section along and down into givendale would be a great downhill exit to the A170 for Dalby Forest bikers. The open section of this largely unused path in Givendale is already obviously used by horse riders, so why not make it a permissive Bridleway? Just a thought.

I also walked the Blue Man Walk some years ago and experienced similar problems with lack of signage and waymarking. Without a map and compass and a degree of intuition I would not have reached the other end! Please do amend the route to enable public transport connections to (and if possible directly between) both ends, but please put proper and clear signage in place, and then regularly check and maintain this! Many thanks in anticipation. Damian Scott Wakefield TRAC www.yhatrac.org.uk

What's of interest

We are carrying out a review of this route this year including looking at alternative start and finish points to give better access to public transport. This may increase the length of the walk to 20 miles. We are interested in any views you have on this route. Please feel free to e.mail us at the contact shown.
