About Abbots Amble

The Abbots Amble is a partially surfaced route leading to the lake. Taking visitors through a variety of habitats, including bluebell woods with oak trees. Douglas Fir plantations hold wildlife such as Goldcrests and Roe deer, which can be seen from the trail.

How to get there:

Abbots Amble can be started from Abbots Wood Car Park in Abbots Wood which is part of Abbots Wood. Hailsham is the nearest town or village.

Follow road signs off the A22 between Hailsham and Polegate and the A27 at Wilmington

Wildlife

Mammals: Roe deer can be seen at the quieter times of day amongst the open areas near the lake.
Visitors to the lake around dusk are rewarded with views of feeding Daubenton and Pipistrelle bats skimming the lake's surface. Mink can also be seen. We have information about Roe deer

Birds: Crossbills, Siskin and Redpoll are seen near the conifer and wet woodland in the winter.
Kingfisher is a regular sight throughout the year, whereas Water Rail are winter visitors to the rushes.
A number of the 23 pairs of Nightingale within the wood can be heard from this walk.
Summer evenings watching newly felled areas will afford views of Woodcock and Nightjar. We have information about Nightjar

Insects and reptiles: Adders and lizards bask on warm banks along the walk. The lake is a good place to find Grass Snakes swimming in search of the plentiful supply of frogs and newts, of which common and palmate varieties exist.
Ride junctions are worth waiting around to see butterflies patrolling their territories. Species like Pearl Bordered Fritillaries, White Admirals and Green Hairstreak. We have information about Adder and Pearl-bordered fritillary

Habitats: Along this trail many habitats are encountered offering the walker a diverse range of homes to many species, wet woodland, open water, coniferous and deciduous forest, and forest glades connected with wide grassy tracks.

Lovely walk, a little boring on the road section but made up for it through the woods and the lake sections. I will be bringing my extended family here though as it is a fantastic day out.

Hudson (my dog) and I love to wander around Abbotts Wood, it's peaceful and relaxing, a beautiful place to wander early evening.
