Heavy Sides Trail

About Heavy Sides Trail

This trail is one of contrasts. The beginning takes you through some of the mighty oaks which are typical of the lower slopes of the forest, adjacent to Masmill Beck. The trail then climbs through an area of coniferous trees which border the forest boundary along Heavy Sides where the views of Skiddaw and Bassenthwaite Lake awaits you. It returns to the car park through an area of mixed species forest.

How to get there:

Heavy Sides Trail can be started from Noble Knott in Whinlatter Forest Park. Keswick is the nearest town or village.

Road:- From Keswick: Take the A66 west towards Cockermouth. At Braithwaite turn west onto the B5292 for Lorton. Follow Visitor Centre Sign Posts.

Bus:- Bus from Keswick.

Train:- Nearest station is Penrith (25 miles east) on the west coast mainline.
