West Tanpit Wood Trail

About West Tanpit Wood Trail

A short walk through the woods can be started from the small car park. Follow the forestry track then turn right at a carved waymarker onto a woodchip path. After a footbridge the path is mainly unsurfaced until it rejoins the forest track.

The small building next to the footbridge is an old pumphouse which provided power to transport water from the brook, via a set of cast iron pipes, to local buildings and troughs on the Failand Estate. The pump was in operation as recently as the 1950s

How to get there:

West Tanpit Wood Trail can be started from West Tanpit Wood in Bristol Woodlands. Abbots Leigh is the nearest town or village.

From the M5 take junction 19 and follow the A369 towards Bristol. Just west of Abbots Leigh turn down Sandy Lane and continue for 1 mile to reach a small car parking area at the woodland entrance.

What's of interest

A carpet of woodland flowers creates lots of colour in the spring when bluebells, wild garlic, celandines and greater stichwort can all be seen.
