Volcano Trail

Follow a combination of forest tracks, minor roads and rough uneven paths on this circular long distance waymarked walk visiting a number of key features in the forest including the copper bog. There are 5 panels along the route to help you explore Coed y Brenin's violent volcanic history. The trail visits Moel Hafod Owen, the highest point in the forest. Go prepared for a long day out in some of the wildest parts of the woods. If you require more in depth information on the Geology of the area then please download the technical guide on the right hand side of this page.

How to get there:

Volcano Trail can be started from Pont Cae'n y Coed in Coed y Brenin. Dolgellau, Porthmadog, Bala, Barmouth, and Machynlleth are the nearest towns or villages.

From visitor centre head South on A470 for 2 miles. On reaching the village of Ganllwyd turn sharp left immediately after the 40mph speed limit sign. Follow this minor road over a stone bridge and continue following the road on the right with the river Mawddach below. The car park is on the right at the head of the Bailey bridge after about quarter of a mile.
