About Carron Valley Red Mountain Bike Trail

Please note, the Cannonball MTB trail will be closed from mid February until end of March for trail upgrading. (Updated 7th February 2012)

Thank you for your cooperation.

Advance notice: The "Runway"  will be closed in the near future to carry out essential tree harvesting operations. We will post details here when we have exact dates. The rest of the trails will remain unaffected and diversions will be in place. Please obey all on site signage for your own safety. Thanks for your cooperation.

The natural beauty of this area, combined with panoramic views, offers big country biking in the heart of Scotland within easy reach of the major cities.

The 10.5km of red-graded trails have something for everyone. Linked trail sections provide the option of a short, fun route, or something longer and more challenging on singletrack and forest road.

Start your ride at the Carron Valley car park. Follow the track by the side of the reservoir to the beginning of the trail.

The Pipe Dream

The Pipe Dream provides an ideal warm up as you ascend to Eas Dubh. Moderate, swoopy singletrack breaks up the gentle climb with superb views across the Valley. The fast exit into the quarry through Stoney Broke sets you up for the last stretch of climb up to Eas Dubh.

Eas Dubh

Eas Dubh (Ee-as Doo) - Or 'Black waterfall' will test the skills of an intermediate rider. Catch your breath at the top and admire the panoramic views before descending the Kelpies Staircase - a steep stone pitched section that's not for the faint hearted! Glimpse the waterfall on your left as you dance through the tight switchbacks of the Birlin’ Bogills. Just don’t hang around too long.

Cannonball Run

Shoot down the fast flowing singletrack of the Cannonball Run. Keep your sights on the junction as you approach Recoil - gun it round the huge berm to begin another lap of Pipe dream or eject beforehand towards The Runway, the choice is yours!

The Runway

When it’s time to land, head for The Runway.  This orange-graded, feature packed, fast-flowing freeride-style descent is designed so beginners can roll the jumps and experienced riders can take off!

Experience Turbulence as you drop in, feel the speed through the Corkscrew and explode out of The Bombhole before lining up for the Final Approach.  Littered with berms, jumps, stone drop-off and tabletops, the Fun Park's guaranteed to satisfy those who prefer airtime!

  • If it is your first time please look at the features before riding them.

Please note that this is a quiet forest, but is sometimes busy with timber traffic. When you are riding, expect to meet other forest users and be prepared to meet and greet along the way.

How to get there:

Carron Valley Red Mountain Bike Trail can be started from Carron Valley Car-park in Carron Valley Forest. Denny, Fintry, Kilsyth, and Stirling are the nearest towns or villages.

Sorry, no - if it's Forestry Commission Scotland land, then unauthorised vehicular access is against the law. Contact our local office to find out if there are any possibilities of gaining authorised access and how to go about doing so.
