About Riverbank path
This path follows the east bank of the River South Esk as it meanders past Lord Ancrum's Wood. Enjoy the peace of the river and the wildlife that abounds.
It is a linear walk on Forestry Commission land or you can return to the front of the College on the west bank.
How to get there:
Riverbank path can be started from Icehouse Bridge in Lord Ancrum's Wood. Dalkeith is the nearest town or village.
Once in the College grounds, walk towards the front of the building up the main driveway. Cut across the parkland once you see the Forestry Commission Scotland sign beside the riverbank. The bridge is beside the sign.

Wildlife
Mammals: Keep your eyes open along the path for roe deer - you may just catch sight of a white tail bobbing away from you into the trees. We have information about Roe deer
Birds: The river is a great spot to sit and watch for kingfishers, dippers, grey wagtails and ducks. The woodland is full of birds such as song thrush, bullfinch, great spotted woodpecker and jays.
Habitats: Lord Ancrum's Wood is a beautiful ancient woodland, this means it is very important as a habitat for wildlife. It is a native woodland that is carpeted with wild garlic in the summer amongst other wild flowers.
