Ord Hill Archaeology Trail

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)

About Ord Hill Archaeology Trail

Although this may now look like an exposed and slightly forboding open hill, 3,000 years ago it was the hub of a thriving community, perhaps the forerunner of Lairg.

The hill and its slopes are scattered with a rich variety of ancient features and remains. The trail snakes between burial cairns, hut circles, burnt mounds, ancient banks, field clearance heaps and other fascinating features from the past.

Even if you are not interested in archaeology the trail is well worth a visit just to enjoy the magnificent views over Loch Shin into central Sutherland and the 3,000 foot high Ben Klibreck.

At the Ferrycroft Countryside Centre, where the trail starts, there are audio visual displays based on the history of this area.

How to get there:

Ord Hill Archaeology Trail can be started from Ferrycroft in Ferry Wood which is part of Sutherland. Lairg is the nearest town or village.

Follow signs for Ferrycroft Countryside Centre.
