Ord Hill Archaeology Trail

Although this may now look like an exposed and slightly forboding open hill, 3,000 years ago it was the hub of a thriving community, perhaps the forerunner of Lairg. The hill and it's slopes are scattered with a rich variety of ancient features and remains. The trail path snakes between burial cairns, hut circles, burnt mounds, ancient bank, field clearance heaps and other fascinating features from the past. Even if you are not interested in archaeology the Trail is well worth a visit just to enjoy the magnificent views over Loch Shin into central Sutherland and the 3,00 foot high Ben Klibreck. At the Ferrycroft Countryside Centre, where the Trail starts there are audio visual displays based on the history of this area.

How to get there:

Ord Hill Archaeology Trail can be started from Ferrycroft in Ferry Wood which is part of Sutherland. Lairg is the nearest town or village.
