About Lochan nan Nathrach
This fairly level trail leads from the Hayfield car park out to Lochan nan Nathrach (The Serpents' Loch).
Begin at the steps beside the car park and follow the forest road for a short distance before turning right then quickly left through the woods following the red waymarkers. This path skirts the south shore of Loch Morlich.
After about two miles, a junction is reached. Straight on takes you round the lochside via the Rothiemurchus Estate paths, whilst turning left takes you round to the Serpents' Loch (so called because of the number of adders found here in the past).
Returning to the trail, follow round the corner before plunging into the forest on the route of an old railway line which was used by the Canadian lumberjacks to extract timber during the First World War. Turn left at the next forest road junction to return to the car park.
How to get there:
Lochan nan Nathrach can be started from Hayfield in Glenmore which is part of Glenmore Forest Park. Aviemore is the nearest town or village.
Take the ski road from Aviemore towards the Cairngorms and after six miles you will be in Glenmore Forest Park.
Go through Glenmore Village, cross the bridge over the Abhainn Ruigh-eunachan and the Herons Field car park is 150 yards beyond the bridge on the right.
