About Craigmony Walk
This is a very pretty, circular walk which climbs to the top of Craigmonie crag. It goes through Craigmonie and the neighbouring Balmacaan Wood.
Craigmonie is a rocky hilltop above Drumnadrochit covered with Scots pine trees, owned by Woodland Trust Scotland.
It is believed to be the site of an iron-age, vitrified fort but there is little evidence remaining. It was also an execution site in days gone by.
This is an exellent walk for birdwatching look and listen for black caps, redstarts, woodpeckers and many others.
How to get there:
Craigmony Walk can be started from Craigmonie Access Point in Craigmonie which is part of Glen Urquhart. Drumnadrochit, Lewiston, and Balnain and Inverness are the nearest towns or villages.
From the A82 at Drumnadrochit, turn up onto Pitkerrald Road. After 200 metres, take the left hand fork onto a rough farm track, then another left hand fork soon after. Craigmonie woodland is another 200 metres along here on the west side of the track.
There is no parking, so it is better to park in the village carpark, adjacent to the A82 and follow these directions on foot.
There is a bus service between Inverness and Fort Augustus which stops at Drumnadrochit.
