Loch Glashan Trail (closed)

(Average user rating3 unrated 3/5)

About Loch Glashan Trail

Please note that due to recent storm damage all trails are closed at Glashan. We will notify you as soon as we can when they are to re-open. Sorry for the inconvenience (as at January 2012).

This route is primarily intended as a cycle trail but also makes a great walk taking about four hours.

Forest roads take you right round Loch Glashan and through Kilmichael forest without having to climb too many hills. So if you take your time and have a few stops along the way it becomes quite an easy route.

The Add Ponds make a great half waypoint to stop and have a picnic. Old quarry pits next to the River Add were landscaped and then flooded and now provide a great habitat for wildlife.

During the summer months 10 species of dragonfly and damselfly can be found as well as many other insects. The insects also attract birds and bats that go there to feed.

Please note that there is currently Forest Operations taking place in Glashan. For your own safety, please be aware of timber lorries using the forest roads.

Please observe all prohibition and warning signs and wait until the lorries have loaded or until the driver has acknowledged your presence before passing.

How to get there:

Loch Glashan Trail can be started from Glashan in Kilmichael Forest which is part of Kilmichael Forest. Lochgair is the nearest town or village.

From Lochgilphead, follow the A83 through Lochgair. The road leadling to Glashan is on the left about 200m beyond Lochgair power station.

Form Inveraray, follow the A83 through Minard. Glashan is about seven miles beyond Minard.

Pleasant trail around the loch. The trail would benefit from some more waymarkers.
