About Hemlock Walk
Kilmun Arboretum is closed until further notice due to storm damage.
Following recent weather conditions, we would advise anyone visiting the forest to exercise extra caution as there are likely to be blown trees and storm damage which we have not had the opportunity to make safe. We are currently working to inspect all our facilities and forest blocks, if you do come across anything of concern please do report it to us on 01369 860 703.
The Kilmun Forest research plots were established in the 1930's to monitor the success of a variety of exotic tree species in the humid west coast environment.
Among the exotic species in the Aboretum there are Japanese Maples which have a flamboyant colour effect in late autumn.
The Hemlock Walk is one of three waymarked paths that wind through the plots and require a moderate degree of fitness.
See also our pages on forests around Dunoon.
How to get there:
Hemlock Walk can be started from Kilmun car park in Kilmun Aboretum which is part of Argyll Forest Park. Dunoon is the nearest town or village.
There are two equally appealling approaches to the Forest Park from Glasgow.
By car ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, or by the A82 along Loch Lomond through Tarbet, entering the Park at Arrochar. You then follow signs for Kilmun.
