Goukstane walk

An interesting walk that goes through pine woodland and then follows the Clachie burn. Visit the Goukstane ('Cuckoo stone'), which is signposted just off this walk. It is thought to be visited by the first cuckoo to return to Bennachie after spending the winter in Africa. Other people believe that this large stone was thrown down the hill by the giant Jock O' Bennachie. Can you find his finger prints?!

You can download a map of the trail from the 'what's of interest' panel on the right of this page.

How to get there:

Goukstane walk can be started from The Bennachie Centre Car Park in Bennachie. Chapel of Garioch is the nearest town or village.

Travel on the A96 north past Inverurie. Approximately 2 miles beyond Inverurie take a road on the left sign posted to Chapel of Garioch. At Chapel of Garioch turn left (sign posted to the Bennachie Centre). Follow this road for 2 miles. The car park is on your right.

OS Grid Reference: NJ 698 216

Mammals: Red squirrels can occasionally be seen. Roe deer can sometimes be seen in the woodland clearings. We have information about Red squirrel and Roe deer

Birds: As this is the Gouk or Cuckoo trail listen out in April or May for the "cuckoo". It is the male cuckoo that sings as he trys to find a mate!
