Midsummer walk on Simonside Hill, Northumberland

The dark outline of Simonside dominates the middle reaches of Coquetdale. For thousands of years, people have been drawn to this landmark, on occasions to bury their kinsfolk in stone-lined graves (cists). Today, walkers from all over the region are attracted by the dramatic views. The Ridge Walk climbs to the top of Simonside Crag (419 metres), where a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Cheviots and of the whole of the Northumbrian coastline is revealed on a fine day.

Attempted to walk red trail and when got to diversion it's seemed posts showed both ways were not accessible by unauthorised personnel?! Is the diversion still on and open, or are the signs correct that it is closed off?! Many thanks

Sorry for any confusion, but the diversions are all open. We will check this today to ensure the correct signage is in place and the diversion is clear. Please note, the diversion will be in place for another six weeks while the forestry work is completed.

Hi Can I check whether the red trail is open again, I attempted to walk this route earlier in the year but there was a diversion in place? Many Thanks

The red trail is currently diverted and access is still possible to the top of Simonside Hill. The forestry work was suspended due to weather conditions making the ground too boggy and is due to resume when prevailing conditions allow.

Beautiful day, beautiful scenery. July 2014 on an English summers day. I particularly liked the contrast of the walk... Through the dappled light of the forest and then up to the wide open spaces of the ridge. The views from the ridge and majestic. I saw only one other person. The peace around the large boulders at the top of the climb was uplifting to a weary townie. Do this walk! It's good for the spirit.
