The dark outline of Simonside dominates the middle reaches of Coquetdale. For thousands of years, people have been drawn to this landmark, on occasions to bury their kinsfolk in stone-lined graves (cists). Today, walkers from all over the region are attracted by the dramatic views. The Ridge Walk climbs to the top of Simonside Crag (419 metres), where a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Cheviots and of the whole of the Northumbrian coastline is revealed on a fine day.

The route has improved since the clear cutting last year but there is a diversion to the top of the crag due, I think, to footpath improvement work, which takes you round the back. This path is narrow and tricky negotiating heather stalks, but eventually takes you to the top. Adds a mile or so to the total walk length

Sign posting is confusing. Needless to say we got lost until helpful forst worker and another walker put us on the right track. 4 mile walk ended up as 6!
Attempted to walk red trail and when got to diversion it's seemed posts showed both ways were not accessible by unauthorised personnel?! Is the diversion still on and open, or are the signs correct that it is closed off?! Many thanks
Forestry Commission Response
Sorry for any confusion, but the diversions are all open. We will check this today to ensure the correct signage is in place and the diversion is clear. Please note, the diversion will be in place for another six weeks while the forestry work is completed.
