Ravensheugh Walk, Simonside

(Average user rating: unrated unrated)
The path follows the forest road then heads west. Take a rest when you reach the seat and admire the view. Just beyond the forest, to the right, is the remains of a hill fort. On the far side of Chesterhope Burn are the remnants of a Beech wood planted by the first Lord Armstrong in 1870. Visit the well known as Little Church rock before climbing to open moorland - the home of Red Grouse and the less common Blackcock - and on to a view point below the crags. In the distance the hills roll from Long Crag in the east to Catcleugh Shin in the west with the Cheviot itself dominating. Now follow the orange waymarkers towards the forest boundary and pause on the edge of Ravensheugh Crag to look down at the bird sanctuary at Caistron before returning to the car park.
