A picturesque trail following the contours of the hillside with some strenuous sections along the way. You will be rewarded with a stunning view across the Exe Valley and weir, towards Woodrow Barton Farm.
Jane Austen (1775-1817) is thought to have stayed at Pynes House, a grand house further along the valley to the west, while on one of several family holidays to Devon. In her first published book, Sense and Sensibility, the Dashwood family are forced to move to Devonshire, to a cottage ‘within four miles northward of Exeter’. It is believed that Austen based Barton Park, the home of the character Sir John Middleton, on Pynes House, and that Barton Cottage, the home of the Dashwood sisters, was inspired by what is now Woodrow Barton Farm.
How to get there:
Red Trail can be started from Bottom Car Park in Stoke Woods. Exeter is the nearest town or village.
Follow the A396 Tiverton road from Exeter. One mile after Cowley Bridge turn right in to the signposted car park.
