Machell's Coppice Walk

Spend some time in the landscape that inspired Arthur Ransome's main characters, Dick and Dorothea - the Picts, and Nancy and Peggy - the Martyrs. While on holiday in the Lake District the four friends explored the woodlands and foreshore surrounding Conistone Water. This trail passess through mixed broadleaved woodland, offering fine views over the lake to Ransome's "Mount Kanchenjunga" (in reality The Old Man Of Coniston). Along the way you may discover "The Dogs Home" where the Martyrs hid from their dreadfull Great Aunt, who dressed them in tidy clothes and made them practice the piano.

How to get there:

From Coniston follow the minor road south torwards Spark Bridge along the east side of Coniston Water. The car park is on the left half way down the lake.
