Woodfuel

It might sound strange, but burning wood is a good thing! Wood is a clean, efficient and renewable fuel source and using wood from well-managed woodlands gives owners an opportunity to improve the biodiversity value of their woodland by developing a market for unsaleable timber. Also, the UK Government is committed to combating climate change by reducing carbon emissions by 20% below 1990 levels by 2010 and 60% by 2050. Biomass, or plant matter that can be converted to fuel, which includes woodfuel, is a renewable source of energy that can make a contribution to achieving these targets. As part of our national Woodfuel Strategy we are working on Regional initiatives to support the development of the biomass sector in the East Midlands. We are a partner in the Bioenergy Group which is an informal partnership of organisations collectively seeking ways to increase the use of locally grown biomass in the East Midlands. With support from East Midlands Development Agency we have been running a series of training and awareness raising events for woodland owners, land based businesses and potential end-users.
