Apparent consumption of wood products

previous | next

Apparent consumption (defined as production + imports - exports) of wood products around the world totalled 390 million m3 sawnwood, 280 million m3 wood-based panels and 396 million tonnes of paper and paperboard in 2010 (Table 9.6).

Around one third (32%) of all sawnwood was consumed in Asia and around one quarter each in Europe (28%) and in North & Central America (25%). Reflecting the increased production of sawnwood in 2010 (see Table 9.5), apparent consumption of sawnwood increased in all regions between 2009 and 2010, and by 9% overall. The largest changes took place in Asia (a 12% increase) and in Europe (a 12% increase).

Asia consumed around one half (49%) of the world's wood-based panels, around one quarter (26%) was consumed in Europe and around one fifth (18%) in North & Central America. Apparent consumption of wood-based panels worldwide increased by 7% between 2009 and 2010.

Almost one half (46%) of all paper and paperboard was consumed in Asia in 2010, around one quarter (24%) in Europe and a further quarter (23%) in North & Central America. At a global level, apparent consumption of paper and paperboard increased by 6% between 2009 and 2010, reflecting increases in all regions.
