National Inventory of Woodland and Trees

previous | next

This section contains information extracted from the 1995-99 National Inventory of Woodland and Trees (NIWT). The statistics are based on field survey data.

The first cycle of the National Forest Inventory (NFI) began in 2009 and will be completed in 2014. Therefore full field survey results from the NFI are not yet available. The NFI report "Standing Timber Volume for Coniferous Trees in Britain", released in April 2012 and available at www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/infd-8tel28, provides interim results on the area and standing volume of coniferous trees, including breakdowns by species and age class, based on the sample squares surveyed so far. Equivalent figures for broadleaved species will be available in 2013.

Further information on the National Forest Inventory is available at www.forestry.gov.uk/inventory
