In 2011, 36% of sawn softwood produced by larger sawmills was used for fencing, 33% for packaging and pallets, 28% for construction, and the remaining 1% went to all other markets (Table 2.17).

The proportion of sawn softwood being used for construction has fallen over the last 5 years from 35% in 2007 to 28% in 2011.  There has been a corresponding increase in sawn softwood for packaging and pallets, rising from 26% to 33% over the same period (Table 2.17a).
