Historic Townships

Before the Clearances most families in the Highlands lived in townships, in a kind of collective, or joint-tenancy farmstead, housing perhaps a hundred or so people.

You can see evidence of these abandoned settlements - now evocative ruins - throughout Scotland's forests. Follow the links below to discover the stories of the people who lived there.
