Frequently Asked Questions

Here are some of the most frequently asked questions about the Graduate Development Programme.  If the answer to your query is not listed below please email gdp@forestry.gsi.gov.uk

Do I need to have a specialised forestry, or environmental degree to apply for the GDP?

No.  The GDP is open to students from all academic backgrounds as long as you have a 2:1 degree or higher.

Can I apply with a 2:2 or an equivalent Masters qualification?

No.  Due to the popularity of the programme we have to be strict in asking for an upper second class honours degree (2:1) or above.  You cannot apply if you only have a Masters qualification.

Can I apply if I don’t have a UK driving licence?

As long as you will hold a full driving licence, which enables you to drive in the UK by the time you take up the post, you are welcome to apply.  Please mark on your application form that you are working towards attaining your driver’s licence.

  • The duties of this post require frequent travel including to remote areas, therefore applicants need to have a full driving licence that enables them to drive in the UK.  However, the Forestry Commission is willing to consider any proposals put forward by applicants that would allow them to do the job by other means.

Is there an age limit for candidates applying for the programme?

No.  There is no age limit for candidates applying for our GDP.  As long as you meet the essential requirements of having a 2:1 degree or higher, and hold a full driving licence that allows you to drive in the UK, you are welcome to apply no matter what stage of your career you are at.

Is the Forestry Commission an equal opportunities employer?

Yes. The Forestry Commission is committed to providing equal opportunities for all sectors of the community, irrespective of age, disability, ethnicity, gender, marital status, religion, sexuality and transgender.

What is the recruitment process?

  • A 10-minute ‘show us your x-factor’ interview.  This allows the panel to get to know each candidate’s personality as well as the skills they could bring to the GDP.
  • An assessment centre, which consists of a series of tests which include psychometric, team work, numeric and literacy tests.
  • A final interview and presentation to a panel of senior Forestry Commission managers.

How many graduates do you take on each year?

The number of graduates we take on each year is flexible.  It can range between 1 – 3 graduates depending on the needs of the organisation.

How are the ‘show us your X-Factor’ interview slots allocated?

Interviews are allocated on a first come, first serve basis, so to give yourself the best chance of a slot, be sure to send you application at 0900 on the day applications open.

Can I send my application in early?

No.  Applications will only be accepted after 0900 the day applications open.  Early applications will not be kept for consideration.

When is the programme likely to commence?

The programme will commence around the start of August each year.

Can non-UK citizens apply?

Yes.  Please see the ‘Who Can Apply’ section of the website’ for the relevant information.

Why does the programme require spending time at 3-4 relocations?

Spending time in the different parts of the organisation is not only about learning skills and developing forestry knowledge, but experiencing the different organisational cultures and challenges that at GB organisation with devolved responsibilities creates.

Do I receive any financial help in relocating?

Yes.  Although not for your first move.  You are expected to make the first move independently, and thereafter you will receive financial assistance for subsequent moves.

What happens to me after the 3-year programme? What are the career prospects like in the Forestry Commission?

Very good.  At the start of your 3rd year in the programme you can start applying for permanent internal jobs.  This could be managing anything from new woodlands, recreation sites, HR, finance – the choice is yours!

Will another GDP run in 2010/11?

Due to the current financial climate we cannot guarantee that there will be an intake of graduates next year. Keep an eye on the graduate section of the Forestry Commission website, as it will be updated as soon as the status of the programme has been established.
