In School Visits
The Forestry Commission offers in-school visit programmes for Key Stage 1 and 2 for schools in the New Forest National Park and those adjacent to the boundary.
Each year we offer one free in-school visit to a year group, however many classes they have in the year group.
The workshops are highly relevant to our local forest messages and the Forestry Commission’s national key messages and learning outcomes. These are all based around the understanding of the importance of trees. They are also linked generally to areas of the National Curriculum.
Reception and Year 1
The Woodland Trunk is suitable for reception and year 1 classes (4 – 5 year olds). The Woodland Trunk offers a variety of forest items that children can pick out and have explained by the ranger.
Year 2, 3 and 4
Three activity workshops are available for year 2, 3 and 4 classes (6 – 8 year olds).
Here are the choices:
- Trees and Wood – learn about trees and wood - how important they are to us and the wildlife in the New Forest, and how we use the wood when it is harvested.
- The Ranger – learn about the role of a ranger, keeper and forester. What do they all do in the New Forest?
- New Forest Ecosystems – learn about some of the special plants and animals in the New Forest.
If for any reason the school cannot accommodate the ranger visiting individual classes then a general New Forest Power Point presentation (with Woodland Trunk) is available.
Year 5 and 6
A Power Point presentation is available for year 5 and 6 classes. The Woodland Trunk is also used in this presentation to show and tell. This is delivered to the whole year group rather than individual classes.
Cost: Free, however if a school requires extra visits there is a cost of £35 per class.
Length: 45min – 1hour
