Britain’s biggest project to restore ancient bogland
In a project led by the Forestry Commission England, more than 1,000 hectares in the Border Mires, on the southern edge of the Kielder Forest, has been restored as part of a Government drive to improve Sites of Special Scientific Interest in England.
About 800,000 conifers were felled and 15 km (9.3 miles) of drains blocked to re-wet the land, and has seen a rise in the water table in the bogs. The work will ensure that important species which breed in the wetlands survive.
