Firewood in Yorkshire & The Humber.
The FC does not sell firewood. We sell timber for processing by others, often as 'standing timber', which can be of firewood quality. For more information see timber sales. We are looking into how we may sell bagged products via our Dalby Forest Visitor Centre in the future, but this would not necessarily be from our estate but could be sourced via a local merchant.
The FC is not offering any 'scavenging' or 'Estover' type licences in Yorkshire & the Humber for the retrieval of any wood post felling or otherwise. All of our woodland has long term management plans, which includes the 'dead' wood, a key element in invertebrate biodiversity. Please do not take wood from Forestry Commission sites.
Are you thinking of installing a log burner or stove?
HETAS is the approved accreditation body for solid fuel appliances, and can provide a list of approved installers, guidance on building regulations and help in getting your burner or stove correctly fitted. A list of accredited biomass installers is available as part of the regional biomass resources guide. The FC advocates making any premises as energy efficient as possible before replacing or installing any new wood heating appliance. Householders can get advice from the Energy Saving Trust or businesses can get assistance from the Carbon Trust.

Looking for firewood for an appliance?
All woodlands belong to someone, so collection of anything from woodland, woody or otherwise without permission could be theft, and possibly trespass if the woodland does not have a permissive Right of Way. "Firewood is not for free." Guidance on firewood can be found here. The FC's advice is always contact the owner and seek written permission if you are determined to collect you own fuel.
When purchasing any wood for an appliance it is good practice to source local, sustainable managed fire wood from well managed woodland (UKWAS or similar). Ask what you are buying, both the quantity and species. Firewood is often sold by the 'load' or spatially, so it could be a bulk bag, cord, sack or even a car boot full!
Species selection for burning is important, people often want hardwoods, such as ash, oak or sycamore, but softwood species, spruce, pine etc are often cheaper, more readily available and burn just as hot, though not for as long.
Firewood merchants can be found in our directory, Yellow Pages, the local press, and the internet. Often garages, hardware stores or farm shops retail logs. Most stove and fireplace stores specialising in solid fuels carry lists of local suppliers. Online resources include the Biomass Energy Centre and Stoves Online as well as our regional directory.
Looking for larger quantities of firewood or wanting to start a woodfuel business?
Firewood - If you are looking to source larger quantities of firewood, either to retail, 50+ tonnes?, or to process timber for sale as firewood in Yorkshire and The Humber, purchase size would need to be a 'artic' lorry size or greater, please contact the suppliers listed in the directory, who will be able to provide you with details of forestry agents, firewood merchants and estates that maybe able to help.
