Yorkshire and The Humber Undermanaged Ancient & Native Woodland
Ancient Woodlands and trees represent a living cultural heritage, a natural equivalent to our great churches and castles. They are also our richest wildlife habitat and are highly valued by people as places of tranquillity and inspiration. Yorkshire and The Humber contains nearly 24000 hectares of Ancient Woodland and its protection and management is identified as a high priority in the Regional Forest Strategy. In order to use resources to their greatest effect, a regional targeting exercise has been carried out. Seven different woodland biodiversity datasets have been compared in order to identify woodlands of highest potential biodiversity value. This has resulted in the production of the Woodland Management Targeting Map. This map will be used to identify priority areas where woodland management can have greatest impact.
Objectives
We are seeking to protect and enhance the Ancient and Native Woodlands of Yorkshire and The Humber and increase the area of native woodland in line with the guidance outlined in "Managing ancient and native woodland in England"
Support available
The whole suite of grants under the English Woodland Grant Scheme are available to support work across the region’s Ancient and Native Woodland. Specifically we can contribute up to 80% of agreed costs for the priority woods identified on the Woodland Management Targeting Map – the new Ancient and Native Woodland Improvement Grant is now open for applications. For non-priority woods a lower level of Woodland Improvement Grant will still be available to support management proposals, but at the rate of 50% of agreed costs.
Applicants should refer to the Woodland Management Targeting Map to confirm if their wood is a priority wood. Alternatively you can contact this office with a six-figure grid reference for the proposed area and we will confirm if it is a priority wood.
