The Mayor's Street Tree Programme

Trees and woodlands are good for Londoners, good for visitors to London, and good for business in London. Consequently, the RE:LEAF initiative aims to increase London's tree cover by 5% by 2025. The Mayor of London is committed to funding a programme to plant 10,000 additional new street trees by March 2012 as part of this goal to make London a greener city. The aim is to plant 250 trees on average in the 40 priority areas that would most benefit from the social, economic and environmental improvements that new street trees provide. To view the maps showing all 40 areas, please see the information under the area headings below.

Boroughs, community organisations, charities and local business partnerships can apply for the street tree grant. However, it would be helpful to contact your local borough tree officer before applying for a grant as they are in a position to advise with location selection and species choice. You can find the contact details of your borough tree officer on the London Tree Officers Association website.

Useful advice for individuals on how to assess the suitability of your street for tree planting and what to do next is in Trees for Cities' Best Practice - Street Trees guide.

If you are a member of the public and would like to register your interest to have a tree planted outside your house please go to the Mayor of London's registration website.

Grant applications will open on 23rd March 2011 and close on 15th July 2011.
