Woodland Establishment Grants

Grants for creating new woodlands.

Rates vary for new native woodlands, planting quality mixtures, simple mixtures and standard crops.

Additional grants are available for creating new woodlands in habitat network areas. There are also additional grants for fencing, pest management and the cost of opening new woodlands to the public.

Crops on sites with greater potential to grow quality timber in mixtures that provide some scope for later transformation to Continuous Cover Forestry.  Minimum of five species in the mix with no less than 25% broadleaves (2500 stems/ha)

Fencing costs are grant aidable separately from the planting grant at a rate of £1.75/metre.

DEFINITIONS:

  • Local, Native Planting Stock - Plants derived from locally collected seed - see Forest Practice Guide 8.
  • Core Networks/Focal Networks - these are areas identified by FCW and the countryside Council for Wales (CCW), as having good potential to form linked habitat networks.

Improved Land Premium Rates:

For new woodlands planted on more productive agricultural land, an annual payment is available for 10 years to compensate for loss of income.
