Land Information Search

What is the Land Information Search?
The Land Information Search (LIS) is an easy to use online map web-based tool that is used to search for information about designations or features on a chosen land area. It is very useful for researching the land you want to include in a grant or felling application before you apply.

Who can use the LIS?
Anyone can use the LIS. Applicants, other interested external users and Forestry Commission staff - all use the LIS to perform searches to check features and designations on a given area of land.

How to use the Land Information Search
You can use the LIS in two ways either by carrying out a basic or an advanced search.  In a basic search you can draw a basic shape upon the map and get information about this area. In an advanced search you the shapes you can draw are more complex allowing you to more accurately pin-point the area that you wish to obtain information on.

Full help instructions are provided for both search options. If you do experience difficulties please send an email to the support address given in the right hand link.

Minimum requirements for running the Land Information Search
In accordance with government guidelines to serve the largest possible online audience, the LIS has been developed to operate using Microsoft Windows 98™ or newer (Windows 2000, ME, XP,Vista™). The supported Web Browsers are currently Internet Explorer 6.0 or 7.0™ running on one of the aforementioned operating systems.

Internet Explorer version 8.0™ has a 'compatibility mode' option which should allow users to access the Land Information Search.

Pop-ups are used to display the report that the LIS provides, please ensure you do not block pop-ups when running the LIS.  Adobe Acrobat Reader™ will be required to read the output document provided when running an advanced search.

Please note that information generated by the LIS is specific to a particular country. If your property crosses the English national border you will need to carry out a check on this land using the English Land Information Search.

Using LIS information when applying for grants or licences
Applicants must take account of the information that the search provides. More details about any of the features or special areas listed on the LIS report are available by contacting the relevant organisation through their website. They will give advice about the management and care of these features.

Please note that we cannot accept a printed copy of a Land Information Search (LIS) map as part of a grant scheme or felling licence application.

The Forestry Commission acknowledges the contribution made by the organisations that provided datasets for use in the Land Information Search.
