Forest wind damage modelling workshop

What was the event?

This international workshop contributed to IUFRO unit 8.01.11 “Impact of wind on forests”. It was an opportunity to examine and discuss current methods for tree biomechanics measurement and modelling of forest wind risk.

Tree pulling, tree swaying (for dynamics measurements) and wind load monitoring were demonstrated and discussed in the field.

There were lab-based sessions on analysis of the data that is gathered and how to parameterise wind risk and tree mechanics models.

The workshop was a combination of practical fieldwork and laboratory based data analysis and modelling.

Sessions included:

1. Tree pulling and tree instrumentation/calibration in forest plots at the Forest Research Northern Research Station
2. Analysis of tree pulling and tree calibration data from Session 1.
3. How to incorporate data from the Session 2 analysis into the ForestGALES and HWIND wind risk decision support systems.
4. Demonstrations and discussion of different tree biomechanics and wind risk modelling approaches.
