Data management in land regeneration

 

Land restoration is complex, involving many organisations and individuals who acquire data and/or make decisions based on previously acquired data. For the restoration process to work effectively and efficiently all information pertaining to a site must be available in an accurate, comprehensive, consistent, and transparent form.

Forest Research are developing a computer based system to provide:

• A centralised means of sharing, storing, retrieving and displaying site records
• A database system to support a transparent and consistent approach to site prioritisation and site evaluation
• An ability to incorporate existing records and link with existing data sources
• An ability to spatially relate sample and site characteristics, and interpolate information between spatially related positions
• An ability to audit restoration practice, aftercare, monitoring, and performance, and to monitor sustainability, woodland grant etc
• An ability to raise reclamation standards by narrowing the gap between site potential, restoration specification, sustainability and woodland design.
