Soil and site surveys are undertaken by two foresters stationed at Inver outside Perth and at Forestry Commission Scotland head office in Inverness. This allows a geographical coverage throughout Scotland, which is the dominant work area. However, enquires from the whole of GB are dealt with.
Through an in depth experience of site types and expertise in site evaluation and interpretation, we provide a variety of services in relation to soils and site surveys including:
- Soil mapping (Forestry Commission soil classification) - using ‘free’and ‘grid’ survey methods combined with aerial photography interpretation, when available
- Ecological Site Classification (ESC)
- Site inspections and monitoring
- Fertiliser prescriptions
- Forest Gales (Probability of crop windthrow or snap)
- Detailed Aspect Measurement System (DAMS) a measurement of site exposure.
As an initial local contact point, Technical Services can also provide expert advice from a range of specialist scientists based at Northern Research Station and Alice Holt Research Station.
