CRYPTOSTROMA CORTICALE . Dead and dying defoliating shoots at base of Acer pseudoplatanus . Fungus apparently entered wounds where basal shoots had been removed earlier and then invaded the present shoots , all of which are infected . The stem base is infected , and the lower 12 inches or so of bark is killed and producing sooty bark disease spores within it , though it is still intact . Stem above is alive but crown is brown . Location: Lambeth Palace , London , England .
