ARMILLARIA MELLEA . Honey fungus causing gummosis of Aesculus Hippocastanum . The external symptoms - exudation of a rusty red gum drying to a black crust resemble those of Phytophthora Cactorum . A portion of outer bark has been removed to reveal the dead / live junction ( the paler brown inner bark is live discoloured after exposure to the air ) and the Armillaria mycelium .
