CRYPTOSTROMA CORTICALE . Dead and dying defoliating shoots at base of Acer pseudoplatanus . Fungus entered wounds where basal shoots had been removed and invaded the present shoots ( all now infected ) and the stem base , whose lower 12 inches of bark is killed and producing Cryptostroma corticale spores .
