ERWINIA NIMIPRESSURALIS . Stem of elm showing severe slime flux which had dried when the photograph was taken . Note death and cracks in the bark . Inspection showed that the stem had cracked in 1940 , probably as the result of winter cold and had never properly healed . Probably a slow exudation of sap continued for years until apparently 1953 when the exudation became copious and wide strips of bark were shed . Location: Sherborne , Dorset , England .
