Wildlife at Quarry Car Park Dunnottar Woodland Park
Aberdeenshire Scotland Stonehaven is the nearest town or village. OS Grid Reference: NO 864 851
This small car park has room for a few cars, and gives access to a picnic area set within the old quarry.
The paths within this wood are not waymarked, but a series of signposts and mapposts allow you to follow the paths through the wood.
Mammals: Listen out for rustles and squeeks among the fallen leaves. Shrews are one of our most tiny mammals, but they are quite agressive with each other and shriek loudly at any other shrew that enters their territory. If the warning calls are not heeded, these tiny animals will not hesitate to attack the intruder. We have information about Red squirrel
Birds: Wrens thrive amoung the undergrowth, and blue tits, great tits, coal tits, goldcrests and tree creepers hunt for food in the tree canopy, branches and bark.
Insects and reptiles: During the summer, butterflies and day-flying moths feed along the paths and under the trees. Look out for Common Tortoiseshells and Painted Ladies. Few insects fly during the winter, but there are some moths which brave the cold, and which will cluster around bright lights. Habitats: Surrounded by farmland, roads and urban development, this small wood is right on the outskirts of Stonehaven touching some of the gardens. It helps to link these garden habitats together into a much larger picture. The variety of tree and plant species give a whole range of food sources for wildlife, everything from brambles and elderberries, to beech nuts and pine seeds.
How to get there: Take the A957 from the centre of Stonehaven heading south. Take the first unclassified public road to the right after leaving the built up area behind. Turn right at the next junction and first right again along a short track which leads to a small car park.
