About Hafod

Thomas Johnes' Hafod estate is famous for his trailblazing work in planting upland forests and landscape design in the years 1780-1813. He is recognised historically as the most visionary, successful and ambitious creator of forests in Wales. The estate was designed in the 'Picturesque' style and became an essential destination for visitors touring Wales in search of 'wild Nature'. Today the mansion has gone and Hafod lies within a working forest. Its owner, the Forestry Commission, in partnership with the Hafod Trust, aims to conserve and restore the historic landscape, protect its important habitats, and provide access and enjoyment for walkers recreating on Johnes' pathwork.

How to get there:

Cwmystwyth and Devil's are the nearest towns or villages.

From the Hafod Arms Hotel in Devil's Bridge take the B4574 to Cwmystwyth. Pass the The Arch car park and proceed downhill. Turn right shortly after passing the "Cwmystwyth" sign. Go throught ADAS Pwllpeiran and proceed to a T junction and turn right. Pass Hafod Church and turn left into Hafod Car Park.

From Pontrhydygroes proceed north on the B4343 and turn right onto the B4574 towards Cwmystwyth when you see the Forestry Commission Hafod sign. Proceed along this road for 1 mile. The Hafod Car Park is on the right hand side.
