Carbisdale
 

This wood has a beautiful loch bordered by Scots Pine trees and several impressive mature oak trees surrounding Carbisdale Castle (now a youth hostel). The castle was completed in 1917 by the Duke of Sutherland's widow who did not have permission to build on Sutherland land. Carbisdale was at that time in Ross-shire and the first place the train passed on leaving Sutherland. The clock tower has only three faces, none faced towards Sutherland at that time.

How to get there:

Culrain is the nearest town or village.
OS Grid Reference: NH 575 955

Take the train to Culrain Station and walk to Carbisdale Youth Hostel.
Drive north from Ardgay for about 4 miles following signs for Carbisdale Youth Hostel.
