About Carbisdale

This wood has a beautiful loch bordered by Scots Pine trees. Carbisdale Castle (now a youth hostel) is surrounded by several impressive mature oak trees.

The castle was completed in 1917 by the Duke of Sutherland's widow, who did not have permission to build on Sutherland land.

Carbisdale was at that time in Ross-shire and the first place the train passed on leaving Sutherland. The clock tower has only three faces, none faced towards Sutherland at that time.

Please note that the orienteering trail at Carbisdale is closed due to storm damage.

How to get there:

Carbisdale is part of Sutherland. Culrain is the nearest town or village.

Take the train to Culrain Station and walk to Carbisdale Youth Hostel.

Alternatively, drive north from Ardgay, for about four miles following signs for Carbisdale Youth Hostel.
