About Tentsmuir

Tentsmuir is a popular, extensive pine forest planted on the sand dunes at the mouth of the River Tay. There is a wide variety of plants, wildlife and architectural heritage.

Car park opening / closing times

  • Open daily from 09:00
  • Feb 2010: last entry 15:00, car park locked 15:30
  • Please make sure your vehicle is out of the forest by closing time as the gates are locked after that.

There is limited space in the car park. Occasionally, especially during the summer holidays and on sunny weekends, it is necessary to restrict access and even to close the site.  This is to preserve the special qualities of Tentsmuir and to maintain a safe environment for everyone.

When we do this we will put a sign at the main junction to Tentsmuir, before the entrance.  Please come back another day.

Car parking charge: £1 per vehicle, payable at the electronic barrier. Please have the correct change available.

Please note: overnight stays are not permitted.

How to get there:

Leuchars is the nearest town or village.

Tentsmuir Forest is 1.5 miles east of the B945 between Leuchars and Tayport in northeast Fife. Follow signs for Kinshaldy Beach.

If this area is full, Kinshaldy stables staff may, for a charge, permit parking on their ground. Use of their toilets will also incur a charge. The stables are independent of the Forestry Commission.

Once there, the staff can advise of the preferred route to the beach avoiding the road. We request, due to the high pressure of usage by other visitors, that the dunes directly in front of the car park are avoided, however horse riding is permitted along the beach and the rides at Tentsmuir. We also request that horse riders avoid the main car park and tarmac road into the forest.

Horseriders are not allowed to park in car park, or ride in car park or nearby dunes. However you find out by doing it without knowing otherwise and get your ear bent. How about a sign at the entrance to inform horse riders of such. We don't want to break the rules but if we don't know they exist. Not everyone will of been on this website to have found this out before visiting. Fantastic place, spoilt by bureaucracy and a not so helpful warden.
Forestry Commission Response:
You are right - without notices it is a problem. We have permanent signs on order from our signs unit to rectify this. We do provide an area near the Kinshaldy stables for horse boxes and trailers to park up so as to avoid conflict with other recreational users in the car park. There is no charge to park there. When we meet those with horse boxes and trailers in the car park we ask them to use the area near the stables in future.

Why can the car park not stay open until at least 7pm or 7.30pm at weekends until end of August. Staff member was quite officious and not customer friendly
Forestry Commission Response:
At the weekend, the whole site, 3500 acres, is covered by one person and we aim to do the best that we can with the resources that we have. The hours of opening are carefully planned to coincide with day light hours, school and public holidays to give the maximum benefit to the greatest number of visitors. To avoid confusion the times are the same on weekdays and weekends. The provision of a safe and undamaged site, for staff and visitors, is our priority and unfortunately from our experience, if we left the site open, it would become a venue for antisocial behaviour, with facilities being damaged, and the fragile environment also. It is policy to account for all car owners in the car park well before dusk in order that if a search or rescue is required this can be done in the remaining day light.
