Kilmun Aboretum

(Average user rating5 unrated 4.3/5)

About Kilmun Aboretum

The Kilmun Forest research plots were established in the 1930s to monitor the success of a variety of exotic tree species in the humid west coast environment.

Kilmun is laced with paths - see the Eucalyptus ,Hemlock, Conifer and John Jackson Walks.

This area is beautiful and unique in Scotland because there are 162 tree species planted, not individually, but in ‘mini-forests’. You won’t see single Monkey-Puzzle or Mountain Hemlock trees, but rather you will be able to admire groves of remarkable exotic trees collected from around the world.

See also our pages on forests around Dunoon.

PLEASE NOTE:

AT PRESENT ALL TRAILS ARE OPEN, HOWEVER DURING THE CURRENT WINTERY WEATHER WE WOULD URGE ANYONE VISITING THE FOREST TO EXERCISE EXTRA CARE IN CASE OF SNOW AND ICE.

How to get there:

Kilmun Aboretum is part of Argyll Forest Park. Dunoon is the nearest town or village.

There are two equally appealing approaches to the Forest Park from Glasgow.

By car ferry from Gourock to Dunoon, or by the A82 along the western shore of Loch Lomond through Tarbet, entering the Park at Arrochar. You then follow the signs for Kilmun.

A fascinating series of walks with a huge variety of trees to see. The views are also superb - well worth spending half a day here.
