Silverhill Wood

(Average user rating4 unrated 3.4/5)

This picturesque woodland was formally two colliery sites. Through a process of coal washing, engineering, landscaping, fertilising and planting Silverhill Wood has been transformed into the beautiful Community Woodland it is today.

With its mixture of mature broadleaf woodland and newly planted trees, large open meadows and ponds, the site is rapidly developing into one of the most attractive wildlife areas in the region.

Silverhill wood also boasts the views from the highest point in Nottinghamshire, definitely worth a visit. The viewpoint is marked by an impressive miner's memorial statue and from here you can see Hardwick Hall, Bolsover Castle, the rolling hills of the Peak District and on a clear day Lincoln Cathedral.

Went to silverhill woods for the first time the other day as we have recently brought our first dog and wanted to explore, its an absolutely gorgeous place but one big let down is the amount of filled poop bags tossed about!! Why bother picking up dog poop then just throwing the bag to one side?.......

On Sunday 2nd October , we went to Silverhill so my 5 year old son could do his Autumn project for school. It was a great place to go and found plenty to stick on his sheet (loads of colourful leaves were found on the floor) and a great day out, including unseasonal weather. The saddest point for me however, was to find some mindless vandels had taken it upon themselves deface the miners statue, by adding make up to his face and other parts (boots, etc). On another positive note, even though my son is terrified of dogs (not fully sure why) all the dog owners we passed were very pleasant and understanding of my sons fear and were very good about it.

Fanastic views from the top of the hill. The vllages/hamlets which surround Silverhill are equally picturesque.
