Recreation at Wooler Common
Wooler Common is situated in the heart of the Cheviot Hills country. A wild and beautiful area that masks a turbulent past.Wooler and the surrounding lands endured frequent raids by marauding Scots between the fourteenth and sixteenth century and later by the border raiders or'Reivers'.Wooler Common's recent past is less bloodthirsty. Acquired by the Forestry Commission in 1960, the Common has a pleasant mix of maturing plantation woodland and open'common', criss-crossed by a network of public and permissive paths. An easy access trail encircles two picturesque ponds at the heart of this mixture of mature woodland and open common.

Wooler Common is part of Rothbury. Wooler is the nearest town or village.
By Public Transport
Wooler can be reached by a fifty minute bus journey from Alnwick (service number 473, IDM Travel). This service runs every two hours. A town bus service will take you within 400 meters of the common at the edge of Wooler. The last part of the journey is undertaken on foot along the public road access on to the Common.
