Haughmond Hill

(Average user rating5 unrated 4.7/5)

About Haughmond Hill

Walk through this mixed woodland to discover fantastic views over Shrewsbury to the hills of South Shropshire.

The viewpoint once boasted a castle like folly that featured in 19th century paintings of the hill. Around the site of the folly you will find earth banks and ditches believed to be remnants of an Iron Age enclosure.

Down the hillside, below the viewpoint, is a knoll known as Queen Eleanor’s Bower. No one knows the origin of the name but the mound is a ringwork, a type of medieval fortification, one of only 60 of its type in the country.

How to get there:

Haughmond Hill is part of The Marches. Shrewsbury is the nearest town or village.

Follow the B5062 (Sundorne then Newport Road)out of Shrewsbury. At the brow of the hill, after the Abbey turn right. The car park is on the right after the quarry.

walking

If you are walking with dogs please do not allow them to foul the paths. Particularly the Corbett Easy Access Trail or the Geo Trail as this is popular with wheel chair users and families with buggies.

cycling

If you choose to cycle on Haughmond please take care as there are large numbers of families and walkers with dogs. Please do not cycle on the Corbett Easy Access Trail. Eastridge Woods near Minsterley has cross country and downhill mountain bike trails which will give you a far better ride.

horse riding

Riders are welcome in this wood however we would ask you to avoid the Corbett Easy Access Trail and the Geo Trail.

This is one of my local walks and I keep coming back because it is the only place in the area where I can get a good cup of tea and a hot snack at Pine Tops mobile catering van afterwards (Tuesday to Sunday 8:30 - 3:30). Dog mess is becoming a real problem and owners need to be educated to clear up after their pets. A really beautiful, peaceful place any time of the year.

Good sized car park with many picnic benches & mobile catering van. Some easy mountain biking terrain. Due to the small size of this wood, walkers & dogs are prevalent, so avoid obviously busy periods for biking.

This is a really a wonderful walk for all ages. The wood its self is really well kept. The only problem i have,is the dog droppings on the paths. As a dog owner,it really annoys me the lazyness of the owners. What also i have noticed is the lack of rubbish bins along the walks.Maybe if there was more bins, the dog owners will bag the dog waste and drop it into the bins.I was wondering if there was someone employed to clean the paths,if not i would love to do that job.
