Recreation at Cranberry Rough
Cranberry Rough is an area of wetland, consisting of swamp woodland, tall reef fen, a network of dykes and pool, and areas of damp grassland and fen. The area was formerly a lake known as Hockham Mere and has a outstanding diversity of wildlife, consequently it is a SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest). This area is the only area in Breckland where Royal Fen and Cranberry can be found.
ACCESS - The site is very wet with areas of soft mud and silted up ditches, the dense vegetation and lack of paths make it very easy to get disorientated. For your own safety WE DO NOT RECOMMEND ACCESS. The Pingo Trail passes along the edge of the site and is a board walk along this section. PLEASE KEEP TO THIS PATH. In order to progress the conservation and restoration of this historic grassland and open fen scrub has been cleared, fences erected, and the area has been grazed by Highland Cattle since winter 2007. Please keep your dog under close control. Thank you.
