Cookworthy Forest

(Average user rating4 unrated 4/5)

Cookworthy Forest is an impressive conifer plantation in the gentle hills of West Devon, between Okehampton and Bude.

The Celtic roundhouse is due to be repaired in Summer 2012 thanks to a partnership by Torridge District Council, Holsworthy Cadets and the Forestry Commission. The Cadets as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award will be carrying out the works funded by Councillor Barry Parsons as part of the Councillor Community Grants Scheme.

The forest is popular with orienteering groups and a permanent orienteering course opened in 2007.

How to get there:

Halwill Junction and Holsworthy are the nearest towns or villages.

From the Okehampton direction take the A3079, signposted for Bude. You will find the public car park on the right and Cookworthy Forest Centre on the left, two miles after passing through Halwill Junction.

From the Bude direction take the A3072 out of Holsworthy, and turn off onto the A3079 after about four miles, heading towards Halwill Junction and Okehampton. Follow this road for two miles. The public car park will be on your left and Cookworthy Forest Centre on your right.

Have ridden through this forest, its just lovely. My husband walked through and there are lovely picnic sites as well. Worth going for the birds and walking.
